Chances are you’ve heard of “pick your own” adventures at pumpkin patches and apple orchards. However, a trip to Fredericksburg opens up a new world of picking activities. If you find yourself booking a stay with Cozi Vacation Rentals from around mid-May through mid-August, pick peaches at one of the local orchards near Fredericksburg.
Thanks to our rich soil and ideal temperatures, peaches have been growing throughout the Fredericksburg area since the German settlers first inhabited the area. Since that time, Gillespie County has grown to become the biggest producers of peaches in the entire state of Texas. Now that’s a whole lotta sweet peaches!
There are numerous roadside stands on the corridors leading to town, with most of them located along Highway 87 South and Highway 290 between Stonewall and Fredericksburg. While these stands are great for a fresh treat, there’s nothing quite like visiting an orchard and picking your own.
There’s plenty of orchards to try the best Fredericksburg peaches but these are our personal favorites to try.
Jenschke Orchards
Address: 8301 US-290, Fredericksburg, TX 78624
Jenschke Orchard began in the 1960s when the family sold fresh peaches and produce at a roadside market. In 2018, the family-owned and operated business expanded to its current country store. If you’re in a rush, you can purchase peaches ready to take home but we recommend you spend a few hours and pick your own peaches instead.
This orchard grows over 30 varieties of peaches available for picking throughout the summer. In other seasons, you can pick strawberries, blackberries, and pumpkins. In the winter, you can even get your Christmas tree from them!
For information about their “pick your own” dates, visit their website or Facebook page.
Wahl’s Peaches
Address: 15369 US-290, Stonewall, TX 78671
For more than a decade, Wahl’s Peaches has been in the peach-selling business. This family-operated business grows its crops with no chemical fertilizers or pesticides. Not only can you purchase delicious peaches, but there are other peach-related products like jams, pies, and peach ice cream available.
Check their Facebook page for the most current information about picking dates.
Donald Eckhardt Orchards
Address: 2150 S US Hwy 87, Fredericksburg, TX 78624
Known as some of the pioneer peach growers in Central Texas, the Eckhardt family has been in the peach business for generations. While most of their supply is sold for commercial use, you can still swing by their peach orchard to purchase a bushel and other fresh produce.
Burg’s Corner
Address: 15194 US-290, Stonewall, TX 78671
Another family run business, the Duecker Family really knows their stuff. Since the 1950s, Burg’s Corner has been nurturing their peach trees and growing juicy Stonewall peaches. While their peaches should be enough to get you to visit, seasonally they also offer apricots, plums, figs, apples, pears, and pecans and a variety of fresh vegetables. Just be sure to pick up some of their famous peach salsa on your way out the door!
Studebaker Farms
Address: 9405 East, US-290, Fredericksburg, TX 78624
Although one of the smaller peach farms on our list, don’t let this fool you! They still grow some of the best peaches in the area. You won’t be able to pick your own here but you can swing by their roadside stand to pick up incredibly ripe and delicious peaches to bring back to your vacation rental home to snack on during your stay.
Fischer & Wieser’s Das Peach Haus
Address: 1406 S US Hwy 87, Fredericksburg, TX 78624
You’re probably already aware that Fredericksburg is home to a number of fantastic wineries and vineyards, and while we recommend you spend a full day enjoying wine tours, if you’re short on time, here you can combine peach picking with wine tasting in one place.
Get a little taste of it all here, plus pick-up over 150 freshly made sauces, jellies, and peach preserves to bring home to your friends and family.
