Enchanted Rock State Natural Area

One of the most popular state parks in this area is Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, which opened in 1978. Located directly between Fredericksburg and Llano, this is one of the best Texas state parks.
The park’s centerpiece is the massive pink granite dome, which has been drawing visitors for thousands of years. During your visit, wander the nearly 11 miles of hiking trails or stay late and take in the constellations stargazing. Due to its popularity, you will want to purchase your day pass well before your visit.
Managed by Texas Parks and Wildlife (TPWD), this park is well-maintained and plenty to draw in visitors. Along with the miles of trails, it’s also a great place to go rock climbing. The Loop Trail is pet-friendly but do note that the other trails are not.
Old Tunnel State Park

Ever wanted to visit an abandoned railroad tunnel? Honestly, it’s not high on the list for many until they learn about Old Tunnel State Park. On top of its unique landscape, it’s home to millions of bats. These two facts combine to make it a park you’ve certainly never seen elsewhere.
The old railroad tunnel plays seasonal host to around 3 million bats from about May to October. Learn about these mammals by joining one of the offered programs or do a bit of bird-watching. Call or swing by the visitor center to learn more about the tours they offer.
Lyndon B. Johnson State Park and Historic Site

Located along the Pedernales River a short drive from downtown Fredericksburg, this park not only tells the story of our 36th president but it also serves as a living history farm for Texas-German farmers.
You can even get a glimpse of longhorn cattle on the nature trail, which leads to the bison pasture. While you’re there, be sure to go on a self-guided tour of the LBJ Ranch.
Blanco State Park

Situated south of Johnson City, about a 40 minute drive from Fredericksburg, Blanco State Park is a great one to visit on a hot summer day. Given its prime location on the Blanco River, it’s the perfect place to go for a swim under the hot Texas sun. It’s also a great place to go picnicking or fishing.
If you’re looking for a completely natural place to relax, this might not be it. While there are small waterfalls along the river adding beauty to the scene, they’re man-made. Locals consider this a great “beginner-friendly” state park for those that aren’t as comfortable getting off the beaten path.
Guadalupe River State Park

Situated an hour southeast of Fredericksburg, Guadalupe River State Park is a beautiful natural area on the Guadalupe River. Here, you can enjoy canoeing, kayaking, hiking, fishing, and horseback riding. You can even bring your dog along to splash in the river with you.
Inks Lake State Park

An hour in the other direction will take you to Inks Lake State Park. Located in between Austin and Fredericksburg, only to the north, this state park is surrounded by beautiful nature. The landscape here is just what you would imagine from Texas Hill Country. It’s hilly, arid, and rocky, making the bright blue water really pop against the landscape.
On land, you can enjoy 9 miles of hiking trails but the real draw is splashing in the Colorado River. Here you can swim, kayak, fish, go boating, and even water ski. The outdoor options for fun in the sun are endless here!
