This museum, dedicated to those who served in the Pacific War, is a superb museum focused on World War II’s Pacific Theater. The Pioneer Museum

Operated by Gillespie County Historical Society, this series of ten structures showcases what life was like for past residents of the region. The 3.5-acre complex is comprised of artifacts, buildings, and displays of early pioneers. Throughout the year, the museum has events and reenactments where staff and volunteers dress up in period clothes, and visitors can learn about soap making, sheep shearing, and more. So, be sure to check the events calendar on the website for what’s happening during your visit.
The Vereins Kirche Museum tells the story of two Vereins Kirche structures and provides a detailed insight into the first German settlers all the way through to modern-day Texas. The original building stood in the middle of Main Street for 50 years and was used as a church, school, and meeting place for the local community. It was sadly demolished in 1897 but the replica structures are well worth visiting to get a glimpse into the area’s past.
A day pass is $12 for adults and children, students, seniors, and military personnel receive a discounted price. Day passes provide entry into the Pioneer Museum, the Vereins Kirche Museum, and the Historic Jail.
Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park

Located just outside Fredericksburg in Stonewall, the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park was once home to the 36th president of the United States. The park features the ranch, Johnson’s boyhood home, a visitor center, and the Johnson settlement.
A popular and unique way to explore the town while learning about its history is on a self-guided tour of Fredericksburg’s National Historic District. There are over 80 points of interest and significance. You can pick up a map at the Visitor Information Center on East Austin Street.
Fort Martin Scott

Fort Martin Scott was the first U.S. Army outpost built on the Texas Frontier and it makes a fascinating trip for anyone interested in American military history. The fort was operational from 1848 to 1853 and Texas Rangers used it as a camp before and after military occupation. The Confederate States Army also occupied the fort for a brief period during the Civil War, adding to the area’s historic significance.
The site contains one of the original garrison buildings which has been carefully restored, plus one late 1800s farm shed, and three reproduction garrison buildings. Self-guided tours of the site can be done from dusk until dawn, so you can wander at your own pace and take in the historic surroundings. However, the buildings are only open at the times detailed above, so bear that in mind if you’d like to explore those, too.
Texas Rangers Heritage Center
